Bears fall in MACJC title game, 2-1, in overtime

Lady Luck was not on the side of the Bears Sunday night as their try for history went by the wayside in a tough 2-1 overtime loss to the host Jones College Bobcats in the championship game of the MACJC state tournament in Ellisville.
 
The Bears took a 1-0 lead at the 43:38 mark when Joaquin Bermejillo sent a corner kick in to Felipe Madero who then headed the ball into the back of the goal.
 
The lead held up for the Bears until the 69:33 mark when the Bobcats (14-2) sneaked one into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Neither team was able to score the remainder of regulation, forcing the extra play. Less than 1:00 into the overtime, the Bobcats found the mark for the winning score.
 
"It hurts," said Bears head coach Alex Brown of the tough loss. "That's the worse way to lose a state championship game. But, that's soccer. It can be so cruel sometimes. But, I'm still so proud of how far we've come as a group."
 
"Thankfully," Brown went on, "we get to keep going. We're going to rest up and get ready for regionals next weekend. We've already made history and we want to make a little more; on to the next one."
 
Concluding his post-game remarks, Brown expressed his thanks "from the bottom of my heart to all our Southwest friends and family for your support so far. You guys mean the world to us. Thank you again and (we will) see you again (next) Saturday."
 
The Bears will travel to Ellisville again next Saturday (October 27) to face LSU-Eunice in the NJCAA Region 23 tournament. A win by the Bears will send them to an NJCAA district playoff game the following week.
 
The starting time for the game versus Eunice has not yet been announced.
