Connolly's hat trick propel Bears to 6-1 win at Meridian

On the strength of freshman Marcus Connolly's hat trick, the Bears claimed a 6-1 win over the host Meridian Eagles Friday night in an MACJC South Division contest.
 
With the win, the Bears moved to 11-2, 5-2 on the season. Meridian dropped to 2-13, 0-7.
 
The Bears took a 1-0 lead at the 4:03 mark when Joaquin Bermejillo played a corner kick to Jarrett Green. Green then headed the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.
 
Less than a minute later, Patrick Larsen received the ball at the edge of the box then beat the defender and set up Connolly for an easy goal to make the score 2-0. Connolly then scored his second goal at 26:33 of the game on a penalty kick to increase the Bears' lead to 3-0.
 
Connolly completed the hat trick at 40:25 when Felipe Madero played a through ball to Connolly who then chipped the goalkeeper to put the Bears on top 4-0.
 
Larsen scored his 19th goal of the season at 44:03, with an assist from Bermejillo, to make the score 5-0. The Bears made it 6-0 with 0:13 left in the first half on a goal by Madero with an assist from Nate Bond.
 
Meridian avoided the shutout when they found the back of the net with just under 8:00 left in the game.
 
"It's always good to go on the road and take care of business," said Bears head coach Alex Brown. "I felt the first half may have been one of the best halves we have put together all season. I was very satisfied with the boys' performance tonight."
 
"There is a lot to be determined Monday afternoon (the Bears close out the regular season Monday, October 15, versus Mississippi Gulf Coast)," Brown went on, "and we're looking forward to the challenge. I said before the season started that this Division was tough and every game will matter and that's proving itself every game. We're one step closer to where we want to be and we're not done yet."
 
The Bears-Gulf Coast contest is set to get underway at 3:00 in Summit.
