Host Meridian takes a pair from Bears

The host Meridian Eagles swept an MACJC doubleheader from the Bears Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 6-3, despite being outhit 11-7, and taking the finale 6-1.

The Bears took a 2-0 first-inning lead in game one when
Andrew Beesley led off with a double to left field (he would later add a pair of singles) and scored on Brantley Hughes' base hit. Hughes later scored on a Scooter Ginn single.

The lead lasted until the bottom of the third inning when a two-out grand slam put the Eagles (15-11, 4-6) on top 4-2.

The Bears trailed 6-2 in the top of the eighth when
Crishaun Speight, on base with a single, scored from third on a bases-loaded double play.

Cody Miller took the loss on the mound, surrendering four unearned runs in four innings on four hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Bears (12-13, 1-9) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two when
T Tez Cole, on base with a lead-off single, scored four batters later when Speight reached on an error.

The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 with a solo run in their half of the fourth inning. They would go on to add four runs in the fifth inning and their final run in the sixth.

Josh Merchant went 4.1 innings on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a pair of walks, in taking the loss. He struck out three batters. John Marcus McDowell had two singles for the Bears.

The Bears return to the home diamond for their next games, hosting top-ranked Jones County on April 5 for a 3:00 conference twin bill.
