Lady Bears start conference play 2-0 with home sweep of Co-Lin

Capture inagural Coca-Cola Challenge trophy

The Lady Bears made the 1st Annual Coca-Cola Softball Challenge presented by Powerade a memorable one, and started MACJC conference play 2-0, with a 10-9 and 6-5 home sweep of arch-rival Co-Lin Wednesday night. Game one was decided in 10 innings.

GAME ONE: The Lady Bears (6-11, 2-0) trailed 2-0 before
Jenna Duff's RBI single and a Jordan Fitzgerald double scored another run to tie the game at 2-2.

Co-Lin (5-9, 0-2) held a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when a walk and two errors allowed the Lady Bears to score a pair of runs to pull to within 5-4.
Lauren Walker started the bottom of the seventh with a single and scored two batters later on Fitzgerald's single (she later added another hit) to knot the game at 5-5 and force the extra play.

A three-run homer put Co-Lin on top 8-5 in the top of the eighth. The Lady Bears answered tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the frame on Duff's RBI single and help from a pair of Co-Lin errors.

The Lady Bears trailed 9-8 heading into the bottom of the 10th before getting a game-winning two RBI single from
Madison Parker.

Mikaela Smith got the win in the circle for the Lady Bears, giving up three runs on nine hits and two bases on balls in six innings of work. She struck out one batter. Miranda Magee had two singles in the game while Kelcey Bremenkamp had a double.

GAME TWO: Magee's leadoff homer gave the Lady Bears a 1-0, first-inning lead in the nightcap (Magee later added a single). They increased their lead to 5-0 in their half of the third with RBI doubles from Fitzgerald, Bremenkamp and
Morgan Webb.

Three Co-Lin runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the sixth tied the game at 5-5. The Lady Bears then got what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Webb led off with a single (her third hit of the game) and late scored on a
Jeney Hudson base hit.

Rebecca Davis pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one batter, to pick up the win in the circle.

"I'm extremely excited for the girls and I'm excited for the program," Lady Bears head coach Shea Johnson said post-game. "I think it was a great win for our program and the direction (assistant) Coach (Maggie) Slaton want us to go."

"I think our pre-season was a very tough pre-season," Johnson continued, "but, I think it helped us prepare to get into conference play with a 2-0 start. I couldn't be prouder of the girls and I look forward to continue with the momentum we started today."

The Lady Bears return to action on March 10 when they host the Holmes Lady Bulldogs in a 3:00 conference doubleheader.
