Lady Bears sweep Holmes to get fourth straight win

Smashing six home runs on the day, the Lady Bears picked up their fourth straight win, and seventh in eight outings, with a 7-4 and 4-1 doubleheader sweep Friday of the visiting Holmes Lady Bulldogs.

The win moved the Lady Bears to 8-11 overall and 4-0 in the MACJC. Holmes dropped to 4-14 and 0-4.

GAME ONE: The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Kelcey Bremenkamp led off with a double and scored three batters later on an
Amy Bonvillain base hit to centerfield.

After Holmes tied the game in the top of the third, the Lady Bears responded, and moved out to a 4-1 lead when Jordan Fitzgerald blasted a three-run homer over the centerfield fence.

With Bonvillain on base with her second hit of the game, Kristie Sanchez sent the ball flying over the fence in centerfield to increase the Lady Bears' lead to 6-1 after four innings. A Jeney Hudson solo homer in the fifth ended the Lady Bears' scoring and moved them out to a 7-1 lead.

Holmes sent seven batters to the plate in the top of the seventh and scored three runs to narrow their deficit to 7-4, but they would be unable to come any closer as the Lady Bears held on for the win.

Kassie Shipley went the distance in the circle, giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk, while striking out one, to get the win for the Lady Bears. Jenna Duff had two hits in the game.

GAME TWO: The Lady Bears trailed 1-0 in the nightcap before tying the score at 1-1 on the strength of Fitzgerald's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth. They then scored what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth on Jenna Duff's two-run homer to right field and Hudson's solo shot.

Rebecca Davis pitched 3.1 innings in relief, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out three batters.

The Lady Bears return to the diamond on March 14 when they face Jones County's top-ranked Lady Bobcats in Ellisville for a 4:00 conference doubleheader.
