Bears split doubleheader with Arkansas Baptist

Andrew Beesley scored from third base on a wild pitch to give the Bears a 5-4 win in game two and a split Thursday in their doubleheader with the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes. The visiting Buffaloes took game one 4-2 in eight innings. The games were played at Jackson's Smith-Wills Stadium.

The Bears (11-4) took a 1-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap when Beesley led off with a single and scored three batters later on a bases-loaded double play.

An error and two-run homer then gave the Buffaloes (10-11) a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. The Bears responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead.
John Marcus McDowell reached base via a lead-off walk and scored on Scooter Ginn's sacrifice fly. Beesley, on base with his second hit, crossed the plate when T Tez Cole grounded into a fielder's choice.

The Buffaloes sent seven men to the plate in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs, to go on top 4-3.

The lead held up until the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, McDowell was forced home when Ginn walked. An errant pitch then allowed Beesley to cross the plate with the winning run.

Sy Odom picked up the win on the mound in relief, giving up one hit while striking out two and walking one in two innings of work. Brantley Hughes had two singles in the game while Crishaun Speight also hit safely.

The Bears went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first in the opener when Beesley, on base with a single, scored when
Ray Hutchinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Two singles and a double resulted in a run for the Buffaloes in the top of the second and tied the game at 1-1. The visitors then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.

The score became tied at 2-2 in the Bears' half of the fifth when Beesley singled to start the inning and scored three batters later on Cole's base hit.

The game remained deadlocked through the final two innings of regulation, forcing the extra play.

In the top of the eight, the Buffaloes used two doubles and two walks to score a pair of runs and take the two-run advantage. The Bears put a runner on base in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to score.

Gerald Groue pitched the eighth for the Bears, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks to get the loss. Starter Tyler Pigott went seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out 10 and issuing only one base on balls. Blake Dunaway had two singles in the game.

The Bears return to the diamond, and open conference play, Saturday in Goodman when they face the Holmes Bulldogs. Game one of the twin bill is scheduled to get underway at 1:00.
