Bears drop conference-openers at Holmes

The opening day of MACJC action did not go as hoped for the Bears as they dropped a doubleheader to the host Holmes Bulldogs, 15-5 and 9-6, in Goodman.
 
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when Andrew Beesley led off the frame with a single and scored two batters later when Scooter Ginn reached base on a fielder's choice.
 
Seven batters when to the plate for Holmes in the bottom of the second, with three scoring, resulting in a 3-1 lead for the home team.
 
The Bears (11-6, 0-2) trimmed their deficit to 3-2 in the top of the third when Beesley reached base on a lead-off single and scored two batters later on Ginn's double (Beesley later added a triple). The Bears then tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth when Austin Moen sent the first pitch he saw over the left field fence.
 
Holmes took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when they scored nine runs and went ahead 12-3.
 
Trailing 13-3 in the top of the sixth, the Bears tallied their final two runs of the game to make the score 13-5. Blake Dunaway, on base via a single, scored from third when John Marcus McDowell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A sacrifice fly by Beesley then allowed courtesy runner Chance Groue to cross the plate.
 
Holmes (11-9, 2-0) added the final runs of the game in their half of the eighth inning.
 
Ray Hutchinson took the loss on the mound for the Bears, giving up 11 runs (one unearned) on 11 hits in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out three batters.
 
The Bears trailed 9-0 in the finale before getting on the board with four runs in the top of the fifth. A bases-loaded double by Ginn sent McDowell and Beesley across the plate. Brantley Hughes scored on a T Tez Cole sacrifice fly and Ginn scored on an error to cut the Bears' deficit to 9-4.
 
Crishaun Speight started the Bears' sixth with a double and scored when Beesley sent a 0-1 pitch over the fence in right, the last of Beesley's three hits in the game, to bring the Bears to within 9-6. Unfortunately, that would prove to be the last runs of the game as Holmes held on for the win.
 
Carr Young took the loss for the Bears, giving up seven unearned runs on one hit and three walks, in less than an inning on the mound. Moen had a double in the game.
 
After a few days off, the Bears return to action on March 22 when they host East Central for a 3:00 doubleheader
