Their 2016 home debut was less than successful for the Bears as they dropped a 27-0 decision to the Hinds Eagles in MACJC South Division action Thursday night in Summit.

With the loss, the Bears fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the South. Hinds moved to 1-2 and 1-0.

Seven-yard touchdown passes from Micah Zanders to Stephen Guidry and Ra' Meik Wallace, respectively, along with Spencer Cole's PAT's, gave the Eagles a 14-0 lead at the end of the first half.

Cole booted a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter to up the score to 17-0. Zanders then tossed a second scoring strike to Wallace, this one for 12 yards, and Cole added the extra point and a 41-yard field goal in the fourth to close out the scoring.

The Bears had their chances in the game, but turnovers, penalties and other mistakes combined to keep them out of the end zone.

"We're a bad football team on offense right now," said Bears' head coach Tucker Peavey. "We make too many mistakes and have too many unforced errors and when you do that, you're never going to be successful on offense. We've got to coach them harder and see what the deal is. We're certainly not telling them to jump offside and that kind of thing, but we've got to figure out why it happens and find a way to fix it."

The Bears were held to 254 yards of offense in the game.
Nakia Trotter, Jr.., led the way with 98 yards on 18 carries. Neil McLaurin and Casey Haygood combined to complete 12 of 35 passes for 120 yards with one interception for each. Trey Fleming caught five passes for 79 yards.

The Bears had 11 first downs in the game. They lost two of four fumbles and were penalized nine times for 65 yards.
Ruben Maldonado punted six times for an average of 46 yards with two inside the 20.

"(He) did a great job punting the football," Peavey said of his freshman punter. "He did a good job on (his) one kickoff (the result of which was a touchback). Hopefully he can do that consistently. That's kind of what we've got to be everywhere is consistent at what we do and if we do that, we'll have a chance to be a decent football team."

Hinds totaled 397 yards of offense. Zanders led the way by completing 14 of 25 passes for 152 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He also carried the ball 13 times for 85 yards.

Hinds had 23 first downs on the night. They lost their only fumble and were whistled for 30 yards on three penalties. Cole punted four times for an average of 47 yards.

The Bears remain at home for their next contest as they host the Northeast Tigers on September 22. Northeast was defeated by East Mississippi Thursday night, 54-10.
