Lady Bears get home sweep of Hinds

Austin Pruitt sets two single-season records

With eight games left in their regular season, the Lady Bears remained firmly in the hunt for a spot in the upcoming MACJC playoffs with a 4-1, 10-7 sweep over visiting Hinds Tuesday afternoon.

The wins moved the Lady Bears to 20-16 overall and 13-9 in the conference. Hinds dropped to 10-25-1 and 7-15.

A double and single gave Hinds a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game one. A
MCKENZIE BROCK single, JESSIE PENTON's second double of the game and a Hinds error allowed the Lady Bears to go on top 2-1.

KRISTIE SANCHEZ scored on JORDAN FITZGERALD's base hit to increase the Lady Bears' lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth. GIANCA HOLMES' double, her second hit of the game, scored JENNA DUFF in the bottom of the fifth to give the Lady Bears their margin of victory.

MACY FULTON was the winning pitcher. In seven innings in the circle, she surrendered a run on five hits while recording three strikeouts.

KAYLA SANCHEZ had a double and single for the Lady Bears. AUSTIN PRUITT picked up her 50th hit of the season, setting a team single-season record.

Brock walked to lead off the bottom of the first for the Lady Bears. Scoring later on a passed ball, she put the home team on top 1-0.

Trailing 3-1, the Lady Bears tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third on a Pruitt RBI ground out and Kayla Sanchez' sacrifice fly. Pruitt's RBI gave her a team single-season record of 29 (the previous record was set by Lady Bears' assistant coach Maggie Jackson in 2010).

A single and double in the top of the fifth helped Hinds to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth. The Lady Bears regained the lead, 5-3, in the bottom of the frame on a Penton single, Pruitt walk and sacrifice flies by Kayla Sanchez and Holmes.

The Lady Bears broke loose for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. Fitzgerald's double, her second hit of the game scored one run. Kayla Sanchez sent one across the plate with a bases-loaded walk while Holmes second hit of the game drove in a run and
EMILY TUMINELLO drove in two with a double.

REBECCA DAVIS picked up the win in the circle, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk. She struck out two batters. KELCEY BREMENKAMP had a single in the game.

"Anytime you can sweep a team in our division I think you've accomplished something really good," said Lady Bears' head coach Shea Johnson. "I feel like our girls need a little rest so we're going to take tomorrow off and leave for Senatobia Thursday (they face Northwest Friday afternoon) and hopefully get a split there."

The Lady Bears and Northwest will get their conference doubleheader underway at 2:00.
