Bears split final home games with Coahoma

The Bears had mixed results in their final home doubleheader of the season as they split an MACJC doubleheader with the visiting Coahoma Tigers Saturday, winning the opener 5-0 before falling 7-6 in the nightcap.

The Bears will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Decatur to take on the East Central Warriors in a 3:00 conference twin bill.

The Bears (20-18, 9-13) scored all the runs they would need in game one when
Dylan Spiers led off the bottom of the first and later scored on a Ross Buckley ground out. L.D. Coney reached base on an error and later scored on a passed ball give the home team a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Spiers' double sent
Jarvis Warner scurrying across the plate to extend the Bears' lead to 3-0.

The final runs of the game came in the Bears' sixth when
Zach Giacona led off with a base hit and later scored on an error. Another error in the inning allowed Coney to score.

Tyler Pigott pitched eight innings, surrendering seven hits and four walks while striking out eight batters, to record the win for the Bears. Steven Williams had a triple and double for the Bears while Walt Aldridge, Buckley, Darian Tunstall and Tanner Whittington each had a single.

The Bears looked to be on their way to a sweep in the finale as they took a 6-0 lead after two innings. They scored five runs in their half of the first with the big blow being
Kaleb Clarke's three-run homer over the fence in centerfield. Clarke later added a double and a single.

In the bottom of the second, Spiers led off with a single and later scored on the second of Buckley's three hits in the game.

The Tigers (13-28-1, 7-17), however, slowly worked their way back into the game, scoring one run in the third and fourth innings to make the score 6-2. They then added three more runs in the top of the fifth, using a walk, three singles, a double and hit batter, to close the gap to 6-5.

Two singles and an error resulted in two runs in the top of the seventh that proved to be the winning runs for the Tigers.

Spiers took the loss in relief, giving up a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits.Coney had two singles in the game while
Duncan Cornfoot and Williams both had a single.
