Bears win 17-2 at Pearl River in opener, fall in nightcap

The Bears exploded for 17 runs on 17 hits as they defeated host Pearl River 17-2 in game one of their MACJC doubleheader Tuesday night in Poplarville. The Wildcats bounced back to get a 4-2 win in the finale.

The split left the Bears with an overall mark of 16-7; they are now 6-4 in league play. The Wildcats moved to 19-11 and 4-8.

L.D. Coney led off the opener for the Bears with a double to centerfield. After a steal of third, he scored on Ross Buckley's ground out to put the Bears on top 1-0.

Eleven batters went to the plate for the Bears in the top of the second, resulting in a 7-0 lead. A bases-loaded walk to
Dylan Spiers scored one run, Coney and Buckley both doubled to drive in two runs while Buckley himself scored on an error.

The Bears continued their offensive explosion in the top of the third, scoring seven more runs to increase their lead to 14-0.
Duncan Cornfoot had the big blow of the inning with a grand slam over the fence in leftfield (he later added a single). Spiers drove in a pair with his second single of the frame while Brady Anderson had an RBI base hit.

Carter Hankins made the score 14-1 with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth. But, the Bears answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 16-1.
Tanner Whittington picked up the first of his two hits in the game. He then moved to third on Coney's third double of the game (he later added a single) and both scored on an Anderson single.

Using a double and single, the Wildcats added their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 16-2. The Bears picked up their last run in the top of the seventh when
Zach Giacona walked to start the inning and later scored on Anderson's sacrifice fly.

Jacob Buchanan pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one, to get the win for the Bears. Steven Williams had four singles in the game.

Two singles and an error aided the Wildcats in taking a 1-0, first-inning lead in game two. The Bears took their only lead of the game in the top of the second when, with
Jarvis Warner on base, Darian Tunstall blasted a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence, to put the Bears on top 2-1. Tunstall also singled in the game.

A two-run double put the Wildcats back on top, 3-2, in their half of the third inning. They then closed out the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

Braden Smith took the loss on the mound for the Bears, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits. He struck out four batters and walked five.

Anderson had a double in the game while Walt Aldridge and Giacona both had a single.

The Bears hit the field again on Saturday when they host conference-foe Meridian for a 2:00 doubleheader.
