Gunnell, Southwest Sports Information Bears outlast visiting Mississippi Delta, 6-3 and 1-0 The Bears picked up a sweep of the visiting Mississippi Delta Trojans Friday afternoon, winning the opener 6-3 and taking the finale 1-0 on a bases-loaded walk to Brady Anderson in the eighth inning. With the win, the Bears moved to 15-6 on the season and 5-3 in the MACJC. The Trojans dropped to 15-6-1 and 3-3. The Bears trailed 1-0 in the opener before taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Duncan Cornfoot scored Jarvis Warner and Anderson walked with the bases loaded to score John Marcus McDowell. A double, hit batter, error and sacrifice fly allowed the Trojans to score a run in the top of the seventh and tie the game at 2-2. But, the Bears regained the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the inning when Ross Buckley's double, his second hit of the game, scored McDowell from second. Two base hits and an error resulted in a run for the Trojans in the top of the eighth that tied the game at 3-3. An RBI double from Zach Giacona, his second hit of the game, Jesse Pittman's run-scoring single and a bases-loaded fielder's choice scoring Giacona resulted in the winning runs for the Bears in their half of the eighth. The Trojans put a runner on base in the top of the ninth, but were unable to do any damage as the Bears held on for the win.Kaleb Clarke picked up the win in relief for the Bears. In his two innings on the mound, he allowed a run on two hits while striking out one. Starter Tyler Pigott went seven innings, giving up two unearned runs on six hits and a walk. He struck out a pair of batters. Walt Aldridge had a double and single for the Bears while Steven Williams singled twice. Cornfoot also hit safely. The nightcap was a classic pitcher's duel with the Trojans getting only a second-inning single off Bears' starter Darian Tunstall and reliever's Gerald Groue and Dylan Spiers and the Bears getting only Buckley's double and a single apiece from Spiers and Tanner Whittington. But, the Bears were able to score the only run of the game without benefit of a hit in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Warner scored when, for the second time on the day, Anderson walked with the bases loaded. The Bears' pitching highlighted the victory. Spiers struck out two and walked one in one inning on the mound to get the win in relief. Tunstall surrendered the only Trojans' hit while striking out four and walking five in five innings. In his two innings of work, Groue struck out a batter and walked one. "We struggled a little bit defensively in game one," said Bears' head coach Ken Jackson. "But, I thought we made some plays when we needed to late in the game. I thought our pitching was excellent (in) both games." "Kaleb Clarke pitched well in game one," Jackson continued. "coming back from a short rest (Clarke also pitched for the Bears on Tuesday at Jones County). Tyler Pigott gave us seven good innings (also in game one). I thought it was excellent for Darian Tunstall to perform like he did in his first start (in game two) and then, of course, I thought Groue and Spiers (both) did an excellent job coming in to finish (game two)." The Bears return to the diamond on March 31 when they travel to Poplarville to face the Pearl River Wildcats. The MACJC doubleheader is set for a 4:00 first pitch.   Print Friendly Version
