Lady Bears sweep Meridian on the road

The Lady Bears swept their second straight opponent Sunday afternoon as they defeated the host Meridian Community College Lady Eagles 6-4 and 4-2.

With the wins, their third and fourth in a row, the Lady Bears evened their record at 12-12 overall and 5-5 in the MACJC. The Lady Eagles dropped to 8-18 and 5-7.

The Lady Bears took a 1-0, first-inning lead in the opener Sunday when
JESSIE PENTON reached base on a one-out single and scored three batters later on
JENNA DUFF's double to center.

Meridian tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on an error, hit batter and base hit. An error and two singles then allowed them to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

The Lady Bears took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth, picking up runs on an error and RBI singles from
KELCEY BREMENKAMP and AUSTIN PRUITT. The lead was short-lived, however, as a single, double and two errors allowed Meridian to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame.

Bremenkamp's sacrifice fly, allowing
GIANCA HOLMES to reach the plate, put the Lady Bears on top for good, 5-4, in the top of the sixth. They then scored their final run in the top of the seventh when MCKENZIE BROCK reached on an error to start the inning and later scored on Pruitt's fourth hit of the game.

MACY FULTON picked up the complete-game win in the circle, giving up four unearned runs on nine hits while striking out four batters and walking one. Brock and
JANA MCEWEN both singled in the game.

The Lady Bears again took a 1-0, first-inning lead in the finale when Brock reached on a lead-off single, stole second and scored on an error. Two doubles, a walk and an error allowed Meridian to knot the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.

A three-run fifth inning allowed the Lady Bears to take the lead for good at 4-1. Pruitt picked up a one-out single past the shortstop, her second hit of the game and sixth of the day, and scored on Fulton's second hit of the game, a double to right field. Fulton later scored on a play at the plate after a
JENEY HUDSON base hit. The final run of the inning came when EMILY TUMINELLO's third hit of the game allowed Duff to cross the plate.

Meridian used an error, passed ball and base hit to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as the Lady Bears held on for the win and the sweep.

REBECCA DAVIS picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Bears. In seven innings of work, she surrendered two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out five and issuing one base on balls.

Penton had a double and single in the game while Duff had two hits.

The Lady Bears return to action Thursday when they make the trip to Moorhead to face the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans. Game one of the MACJC doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00.
