Bears split conference doubleheader with visiting Holmes

The Bears split a home MACJC doubleheader with the Holmes Bulldogs Saturday, claiming a 14-13 victory in the opener before falling 17-7 in the nightcap.
 
With the split, the Bears moved to 12-5 (2-2) on the season while Holmes moved to 11-9 (2-2).
 
The Bears trailed 3-0 before getting making it 3-2 in the bottom of the third. LD Coney singled with one out and scored on Ross Buckley's double to centerfield. Buckley then scored on a Kaleb Clarkes base hit.
 
Sending 12 men to the plate, the Bears exploded for seven runs in their half of the fifth inning and go up 9-2. Buckley and Darian Tunstall both drove in a run with a single. Steven Williams had a three-RBI double, the second of his three hits in the game. Coney walked with the bases loaded to score a run and Zach Giacona scored on a wild pitch.
 
After Holmes made it 9-4 in the top of the sixth, the Bears answered with a solo homer from Clarke and a Brady Anderson RBI double to increase their lead to 11-4.
 
Both teams scored in the seventh inning, the Bears when Coney led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch, to make the score 12-5.
The Holmes bats caught fire in the top of the eighth, leading to six runs, and narrowed the Bears' lead to 12-11. The Bears answered with a Duncan Cornfoot homer and Walt Aldridge RBI single, his second hit of the game, to move out to a 14-11 lead.
 
Holmes was able to pick up two more runs in the top of the ninth, but could get no further as the Bears held on for the win.
 
Starter Tyler Pigott picked up the win for the Bears. In seven innings on the mound, the allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out seven and walking one. Dylan Spiers recorded the save, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out one.
 
Giacona and Spiers both singled twice in the game.
 
Holmes jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead in the finale. The Bears made it 4-1 in the bottom of the inning when Coney led off with a single and scored on Clarke's base hit.
 
Holmes scored two runs in the top of the second in increase their lead to 6-1. The Bears then made it 6-2 in the bottom of the inning when Anderson was hit by a pitch and later scored on Coney's two-out double.
 
After Holmes made it 7-2 in the top of the third, the Bears answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to make the score 7-4. Buckley belted a solo homer to centerfield, the first of his two hits in the game, while Williams scored on Anderson's sacrifice fly.
 
The Bears trailed 11-4 going into the bottom of the fifth. They then scored three on Cornfoot's bases-loaded double to close to within 11-7.
That would prove to be as close as they would get the rest of the way as Holmes added a run in the top of the sixth and five more in the top of the seventh to get the win.
 
Carr Young took the loss on the mound. In two innings of work, he surrendered six runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks. Williams had a double in the game.
 
The Bears return to the diamond Tuesday when they travel to Ellisville to face the Jones County Bobcats. The doubleheader is set to get underway at 3:00.
