Lady Bears defeat Bishop State, fall to Meridian in Meridian tournament



The Lady Bears closed out their stay in the Meridian Community College tournament Saturday afternoon with a 13-1, five-inning win over Bishop State. Earlier in the day, the Lady Bears dropped a 4-3 decision to the host Lady Eagles.
 
In the win, the Lady Bears got on top 2-0 in the top of the first inning when JESSIE PENTON hit a two-out solo home run to center field. Later in the inning, JENEY HUDSON singled and scored on REBECCA DAVIS' base hit.
 
The score went to 8-0 in the top of the second when the Lady Bears broke loose for six runs. The big hit in the inning came on AUSTIN PRUITT's grand slam homer.
 
Bishop State scored their only run, in the bottom of the second, using a walk, single and ground out to make it 8-1.
 
Pruitt singled in the top of the third, the second of her three hits in the game, and later scored on Hudson's  base hit to make the score 9-1.
 
Five singles and a sacrifice fly resulted in three more runs for the Lady Bears in the top of the fourth and a 12-1 cushion. The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth when GIANCA HOLMES led off with a double to left and later crossed the plate when KELCEY BREMENKAMP reached base on a fielder's choice.
 
Davis picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Bears. I two innings of work, she surrendered an unearned run on one hit while striking out two batters and walking one.
 
MCKENZIE BROCK had three hits in the game. KAYLA SANCHEZ and KRISTIE SANCHEZ both doubled.
 
In the loss to Meridian, the Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Pruitt singled and later scored. Meridian picked up solo runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Lady Bears went back on top 3-2 in the top of the fifth when JENNA DUFF reached on an error, Kayla Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice and both scored on JORDAN FITZGERALD's base hit.
 
Two singles and an error allowed Meridian to tie the game at 3-3 with a run in their half of the sixth. They then used a pair of errors to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
 
MACY FULTON took the loss for the Lady Bears, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits. She struck out four batters and walked two.
 
The Lady Bears (now 6-6) return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon in Raymond when they face the Hinds Lady Eagles. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00.
