Things did not go as hoped for the Southwest Bears Wednesday as they dropped a crucial MACJC conference doubleheader to visiting East Central, 9-5 and 6-5.

The losses were a blow to the Bears' hopes for a playoff spot; however, it was not a fatal blow and they remain in contention with four games remaining on their schedule.

The Bears took a 5-0 lead after two innings of game one. In the first inning, L. D. Coney led off with a walk and later scored on Ross Buckley's sacrifice fly and Brady Anderson's two-out double scored Jarvis Warner.

Three more runs crossed the plate in the Bears' half of the second inning. Bryce Laird began the inning with a walk and later scored on an error. Buckley's single sent Warner racing home and a bases-loaded walk to Anderson scored Buckley.

East Central (23-13, 16-8) began their comeback in the top of the third when two singles and a double produced a run to make the score 5-1. They made it 5-4 in the fourth with two doubles, a single and walk. The visitors then exploded for five runs in the sixth inning and held the Bears scoreless the final two frames to capture the win.

Sam Richard took the loss on the mound for the Bears (17-21, 10-14), giving up eight runs (four earned) on 12 hits and three walks. He struck out one batter. Walt Aldridge, Trent Gordy, Laird and Steven Williams each had a single.

A lead-off single past the shortstop by Coney and Buckley's ground out gave the Bears a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. The lead was short-lived, however, as East Central used an error, single and three-run homer to take go up 3-1 in the top of the second.

The Bears went back on top, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth. Coney reached base on a one-out error and scored on Buckley's base hit to left. Gordy's second double of the game then scored Jesse Pittman and Tanner Whittington's third hit of the game sent Gordy scampering home.

Three singles and a double helped East Central score three runs and regain the lead, 6-4, in the top of the seventh. Gordy's third hit of the game scored Pittman with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but that would be it for the Bears as East Central held for the win and the sweep.

Brady Badon took the loss in relief for the Bears, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out three batters. Aldridge had two singles in the game for the Bears.

The Bears are set to play their final home games of the season on Saturday with a 2:00 conference doubleheader against the Northeast Tigers.
