Lady Bears split at Meridian

The Southwest Lady Bears split an MACJC South Division doubleheader at Meridian Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1 in the opener before coming back to take the nightcap 3-1.
 
SHADEN MILLER led off game one for the Lady Bears by reaching base with a walk. She later scored on a wild pitch to give her team a 1-0 lead. Meridian (11-15, 8-16) then used a walk, double, hit batter and error to go on top 2-1 in the bottom of the frame.
 
Meridian then added solo runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings and held on for the three-run victory.
 
MACY FULTON took the loss in the circle for the Lady Bears, giving up four runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking three batters and striking out three. Miller, JESSICA PIPKINS, SARAH ROBERTS and PAIGE WALTERS each had one hit.
 
The Lady Bears (14-24, 4-20) went up 1-0 in the first inning of the finale, as well, as AUSTIN PRUITT walked with one out and scored on Pipkins' double to left field.
 
The 1-0 lead held until the top of the sixth when Pipkins led off with another double and score on Walters' homer over the left field fence (her second hit of the game) to put the Lady Bears up 3-0.
 
Meridian scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a lead-off single and two-out error.
 
KEELY FORTENBERRY got the complete-game win for the Lady Bears, giving up an unearned run on two hits. LEYTON TERRELL had two singles in the game while Miller, Pruitt and SEANA FLYNN also hit safely.
 
The Lady Bears are set to return home Tuesday for a Division doubleheader against Mississippi Gulf Coast. The first pitch of the day has been moved up to 12:00.
