Bears swept by East Mississippi

The opening of MACJC conference play did not go as hoped for the Southwest Bears as the visiting East Mississippi Lions swept the Bears Saturday, winning the opener 9-2 before taking the nightcap 7-3.
 
Two hits and a sacrifice fly gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. The Bears then tied it in the bottom of the third when Sam Richard led off with a walk and later scored on L.D. Coney's base hit.
 
The Bears were down 9-1 before scoring the final run in the bottom of the ninth on Ross Buckley's home run over the right field fence.
 
Jacob Buchanan pitched 3.2 innings in taking the loss for the Bears. He surrendered two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out one.
 
Buckley went 4-4 in the game while Dylan Spiers had two hits.
 
The Bears (6-8, 0-2) fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning of game two then tied things in the bottom of the frame when Tanner Whittington singled to score Jarvis Warner.
 
It was 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth before the Bears picked up their final two runs of the day. Brady Anderson walked to lead off the frame and scored two batters later on Reed Thames' hit to right field. Warner later scored from third on a passed ball.
 
The Lions (8-6, 2-0) then scored four in the top of the sixth to take a 7-3 lead and held on to win by the same score.
 
Cliff Hurst took the loss on the mound. He gave up seven runs (only two earned) on nine hits and three walks in six innings of work. He struck out two batters.
 
The Bears return to the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to Wesson to face arch-rival Co-Lin for the final two games of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge. The first pitch of game one is scheduled is set for 4:00.
