Bears defeated at Holmes

In the completion of a doubleheader that began on March 13, the Southwest Bears dropped a 9-7 MACJC baseball game at Holmes Community College Friday afternoon.
 
The Bears (8-10, 2-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when L.D. Coney reached on a dropped third strike. He then moved to second base on a passed ball and scored on a Walt Aldridge base hit. The host Bulldogs (10-8, 1-3) then took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on two hits, an error and a passed ball.
 
The Bears closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the second when Brady Anderson walked and later scored on a ground out. Holmes extended its lead to 5-2 with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Bears made it 5-3 when Anderson singled up the middle and later scored on bases-loaded passed ball. The score then went to 5-5 in the top of the fifth when Trent Gordy singled, the first of his two hits in the game, andDuncan Cornfoot walked and both scored.
 
Holmes then regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when three hits, an error, a passed ball and ground out resulted in three runs and an 8-5 lead.
 
The Bears cut their deficit down to 8-7 in the top of the sixth when Reed Thames doubled and scored on Aldridge's sacrifice fly and Coney reached on an error and scored on Cornfoot's sacrifice fly. A hit batter and sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth gave the Bulldogs the final run of the game.
 
Dylan Spiers took the loss on the mound for the Bears giving up seven runs on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out two batters. Cornfoot had two hits for the Bears.
 
With Saturday's games at Mississippi Delta postponed due to inclement weather, the Bears are next scheduled to play on March 25 when they host Pearl River. Game one is set for a 3:00 start.
