Bears lose 10-inning heartbreaker to Co-Lin, 10-6

It was a tough day at the ballpark Sunday for the Southwest Bears as visiting Co-Lin scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Bears 10-6. The game served as round one of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade.
 
The Bears (5-5) were down 3-0 before getting on the board in the bottom of the first when L.D. Coney reached base on a lead-off walk. He scored two batters later on a ground out to make it 3-1.
 
Down 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Bears scored again when Dylan Spiers reached on a one-out single, stole second and scored on the first of Coney's two base hits. The Bears then made it 4-3 in the sixth when Jarvis Warner scored from third after Brady Anderson reached on a dropped third strike.
 
The Bears took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Ross Buckley's double allowed Steven Williams to cross the plate; Buckley later scored on a wild pitch. Also in the inning, Coney walked and later scored on an error.
 
A walk, two hit batters and a base hit helped Co-Lin score two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 6-6. The game went into extra innings after the Bears were unable to score in the bottom of the frame.
 
A two-out rally in the top of the 10th gave Co-Lin (7-6) four runs and put them on top 10-6. The Bears put two runners on base in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to score and Co-Lin escaped with the win.
 
Reliever Kaleb Clarke took the loss on the mound for the Bears. He gave up four unearned runs on three hits in just over an inning of work. He struck out two batters.
 
Walt Aldridge had two hits in the game for the Bears. Trent Gordy, Reed Thames and Williams also hit safely.
 
The Bears are scheduled to play Lawson State Community College Monday. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12:00. The game will be available on the internet only at southwestbearathletics.com and k106.net.
