The Southwest Bears lost a heartbreaker Monday night in Perkinston, falling to host Mississippi Gulf Coast 49-47 on a tip in of a missed layup with only 0:13 on the clock.

The loss dropped the Bears to 8-11 overall and 5-6 in the MACJC's South Division while Gulf Coast moved to 11-9 and 6-5.

The Bears led for all but 1:03 of the first half. A pair of
Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier, MS, Gautier) three pointers had them on top 6-2 with 16:52 on the clock. Another Rutledge trey gave them a 13-8 advantage with 12:16 before the break.

Gulf Coast fought back to take a 15-14 lead with 6:13 remaining. Four
Jaylen Moore (Harrison Central) free throws then put the Bears back on top, 20-15, with 4:33 to go and they took a 24-18 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Things appeared to be going in the right direction for the Bears in the second half when yet another Rutledge three pointer (he had five in the game) gave the Bears a 27-20 lead with 16:50 left to play and a
Trent Jeffries (Harrison Central) three had them on top 31-23 with 13:07 to go.

But, Gulf Coast would not quit. Outscoring the Bears 16-10, the hosts pulled back to within two points, 41-39, with 6:34 still to play. They then took a 47-44 lead with 2:25 to go.

Rutledge's final three pointer of the night knotted the game at 47-47 and, as the clock wound down, the game seemed to be headed for overtime.

However, Lady Luck was on the side of the hosts as Michael Lewis tipped in the missed shot to put Gulf Coast up 49-47 and they held on for the slim victory.

Rutledge ended the game with 17 points to lead all scorers, including five of nine from behind the three-point line. Moore was also in double figures with 10 points. The Bears made 14 of 20 free throws.

Gulf Coast was topped by Anfernee Hampton's 12 points. He and his teammates made good on 21 of 30 free throws.

The Bears look to get back into the win column Thursday night then they host arch-rival Co-Lin in a scheduled 7:15 contest.
