Home standing Bulldogs defeat Bears

Falling behind early, the Southwest Bears were never able to catch up as they dropped a 65-41 non-division contest to the home standing Holmes Bulldogs Thursday night in Goodman.
 
Holmes took control of the game early, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before Xavion Dillon (Tylertown, MS) jumper with 15:52 left in the half made the score 6-2. However, losing none of their early momentum, the hosts slowly increased their advantage. Leading by nine, 21-12, with 8:48 on the clock, the Bulldogs scored 14 of the half's last 15 points to take a 34-16 lead into the break.
 Jaylen Moore (Gulfport, MS) layup to open the second half made the score 34-18, but that would be as close as the Bears would be able to get the rest of the way. A Jarvis Williams bucket with 13:59 left in the game made the score 50-21 and the Bulldogs (8-4) would go on to the 24-point win.
 
Dillon had 11 points and Trent Jeffries (Gulfport, MS)s 10 to pace the Bears (4-6) on the night. Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier, MS) recorded nine points while Moore had four. Justin McCray (Ridgeland, MS) netted three points and Cliff Fernandez (Sandy Hook, MS) and Monte Martin (Magnolia, MS) both had two. The Bears hit eight of 15 free throws.
 
Holmes' Darly Macon led all scorers with 20 points. He and his teammates combined to make good on nine of 14 charity shots.
 
The Bears remain on the road for their next contest and return to South Division play as they travel to Meridian on Tuesday to face the Eagles. Tipoff is set for 7:30.
