Looking to avenge an early-season loss in Poplarville, the Southwest Bears gave visiting Pearl River all they could handle. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the 19th ranked Wildcats eased out of Summit with a 67-63 MACJC South Division win.

The Wildcats threatened to blow the game open early, taking an 11-2 lead with 15:18 to play in the first half. Back-to-back jumpers from
Trent Jeffries (Gulfport, MS) and Jaylen Moore (Gulfport, MS) brought the Bears back to within three, 18-15, with 10:10 on the clock.

Down 21-15, the Bears went on a 6-0 "mini run" and tied the game at 21-21 on a pair of
Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier, MS) free throws with 4:59 left before the break. The Wildcats (15-2, 6-2) then scored 11 of the half's final 14 points to hold a 32-24 lead at the end of the first 20:00.

A Jeffries three pointer helped the Bears (6-10, 3-5) score nine of the first 13 points of the second half and draw back to within three points, 36-33, with 16:59 left in the contest. Moore's bucket with 13:19 remaining then made it 40-39.

Down 50-45, the Bears scored eight of 10 points and took their only lead of the night, 53-52, on
David Burrell (Milwaukee, WI)'s jumper with 7:27 to go. But, the Wildcats quickly answered with a Laderrick Scott three-point play to regain the lead, 55-53, with 7:07 left in the game.

The Wildcats held a 66-60 lead before Rutledge nailed a three pointer to make it 66-63 with only 0:08 to play. But, that would be the Bears' last gasp as the visitors held on for the narrow win.

Xavion Dillon (Tylertown, MS) had a double-double, 18 points and 11 rebounds, to lead the Bears' offense. Moore and Rutledge also scored in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Moore added eight assists.

Burrell scored nine points while Jeffries added eight.
Justin McCray (Ridgeland, MS) slammed home two points and Cliff Fernandez (Sandy Hook, MS) chipped in one. The Bears were good on 11 of 14 free throws.

Pearl River's Darrlyn Willis led all scorers with 19 points. The Wildcats hit 12 of 17 free throws.

The Bear head up I-55 for the next game, traveling to Utica on Monday to face the Hinds Bulldogs in a 7:30 South Division matchup.
