The Southwest Bears kept things close in the first half, but host East Central took control in the second and held off Southwest 73-63 as they closed out the first half of MACJC South Division play in Decatur.

The Bears took an early lead on a
Xavion Dillon (Tylertown) jumper and went up 11-7 on Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier)'s three pointer with 16:11 to play in the first half. East Central then went on an 11-2 run to go up 18-13 with 11:57 on the clock.

The Warriors (8-8, 3-4) threatened to make the game a runaway when they took a 34-22 lead with 5:48 remaining in the first half. But, a Rutledge jumper and three
Jaylen Moore (Harrison Central) free throws gave the Bears the final five points of the half and closed their deficit to 38-32 at the end of the first 20:00.

Rutledge nailed another trey to open the second half and bring the Bears back to within three, 38-35, with 17:15 left in the contest. But, the Warriors then went on a 19-4 scoring spree to increase their lead to 18, 57-39, with 9:15 to play.

The Bears (6-9, 3-4) would not give up, however, and slowly fought their way back into the game. Outscoring the Warriors 13-9 over a 6:09 span, the Bears cut their deficit to eight points, 68-60, with 1:22 left in the game. But, that would prove to be as close as they would get as the Warriors held on for the 10-point win.

"I thought it was a situation in which it was nothing they (East Central) did really well," said Bears' head coach Thomas Gray. It's just that we could not make a shot. From the perimeter, we shot 21% for the game; we made three threes which is unbelievable for our team. They were giving us those shots and we just couldn't capitalize.

It was a disappointment to see our guys shoot that way from the floor," Gray went on. "We've got to get back in the gym and we've got to work on fine tuning not only just our offense, but a lot of our defensive mentality. I thought our positioning was good tonight. I just think that we've got to be the aggressor a little bit more, defensively, and that's what we talked about before the game and I just think we didn't carry that out well."

Rutledge led the Bears, and all scorers, with 22 points in the game. Moore had 18 points and eight assists.

Trent Jeffries (Harrison Central) picked up eight points for the Bears while Dillon totaled six and Chris McIntosh (Murrah) ied five. Justin McCray (Ridgeland) and Jeremy Reddy (Pearl) both added two points. The Bears hit 24 of 34 free throws.

Quinton Campbell scored 21 points to pace the East Central offense. The Warriors made 18 of 30 free throws.

The Bears open the second half of Division action Thursday night then they take on visiting Pearl River in a 7:15 contest.
