Lady Bears split doubleheader at Hinds

The Southwest Lady Bears split an MACJC South Division softball doubleheader at Hinds Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 5-1 before falling 11-3 in the nightcap.
 
The Lady Bears return to action Tuesday when they travel to Decatur to face the Lady Warriors of East Central.
 
Southwest (10-21, 6-14) took a quick 3-0 lead in game one. Chelsea Nette led off the game with a home run to right field. Then, with one out, Kristen Gekler singled past second base and scored when Brie Harper slammed a homer to centerfield.
 
Hinds (10-24, 6-14) made it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Courtenay Holt belted a solo homer over the fence in centerfield.
 
The Lady Bears made it 4-1 in the top of the fourth when Nette singled to center to score courtesy runner Shaden Miller from third. Miller was on in place of Jessica Pipkins who had reached base via a fielder's choice. The final run of the game came in the top of the seventh when Harley Myers led off with her second hit of the game, stole second and scored on Abi Hall's base hit to left field.
 
Maddy Teague pitched a complete-win for the Lady Bears. She gave up a run on four hits while striking out one and walking four. Payton Lewis had two hits in the game while Mary Margaret McLaurin and Marisa Pruski also both had a single.
 
The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in the finale when Nette led off with a walk and later scored on Gekler's base hit to centerfield. Hinds then scored five runs in the bottom of the first, one in the second and three more in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.
 
The final runs for the Lady Bears came in the top of the fifth when Miller led off with a walk and scored on Myers' home run to left field, her second hit of the game. Hinds then added two more in the bottom of the sixth and went on to the victory.
 
Gekler took the loss in the circle for the Lady Bears, giving up five unearned runs on two hits in less than an inning. She walked two batters. Hall and Leanne Jackson also pitched.
 
Hall, Harper and Nette all hit safely for the Lady Bears.
