Visiting Mississippi Delta takes doubleheader from Bears

The final day of the season did not come to the end the Southwest Bears had hoped for Saturday as they dropped a pair of non-division games to the visiting Mississippi Delta Trojans, 7-6 and 9-0, on Sophomore Day.

A two-out single by Jason Berry, scoring Carson Crites from second base, gave the Trojans (25-19, 12-12 North) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener. The Bears answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 2-1. Patric Devlin reached base on an error and later scored on another Trojans' miscue. Collin Carroll then hit a line-drive single to left field to score Sam Richard.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the second, the Bears (15-27, 9-15 South) took a 3-2 lead when Anthony Durr led off with a single and scored three batters later on Devlin's base hit.

Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bears added another run to make the score 7-4 when Durr led off with a walk and scored on Devlin's second hit of the game.

The Bears added their final runs in the bottom of the seventh. Carroll led off with his second hit of the game, moved to second on an error and scored on Trey Wynn's double to centerfield. Wynn then scored when Durr reached base on an error by the Trojans's shortstop. That would prove to be it for the home team as the Trojans held on for the win.

Richard gave up four runs (one unearned) in relief on three hits in two innings to take the loss on the mound for the Bears. He struck out two batters and walked one. Jesse Travis started the game while Jade Whitten and Caleb Crumpler also pitched.

Andrew Hulbert had two singles for the Bears while Payden Lynch also hit safely.

The Trojans would score all the runs they would need in the finale when they put two on the board in the top of the first. They then added three in the third, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Lynch took the loss on the mound, giving up five runs (one unearned) on four hits in three innings. He struck out four. Chase Ladd, Jacob Savoy, J. D. Stockstill and Austin White also pitched.

Durr had two singles in the game for the Bears. Kendric Hodges had a double in the game while Devlin and Hulbert both had a single. Hulbert's hit allowed him to close out the season with a team-high 14-game hitting streak.
