Bears fall to St. Louis CC, Baton Rouge CC

The Southwest Bears dropped a pair of games in Baton Rouge Sunday afternoon as St. Louis Community College won 8-4 and Baton Rouge Community College won 4-0 in a scheduled nine-inning game.
 
Southwest will open MACJC South Division play Wednesday when the Bears travel to Hinds Community College Wednesday for a 1:00 doubleheader.
 
The Bears (6-8) were down 3-0 to St. Louis when they put two runs on the board in the top of the third inning. Zach Jones led off the inning with a triple to leftfield and scored two batters later on Andrew Hulbert's single past third base. Austin Knight, on base after being hit by a pitch, scored on Anthony Durr's ground out. St. Louis added a solo run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 4-2.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Bears made the score 4-3 when Kendric Hodges led off with a single and later scored on Durr's sacrifice fly. St. Louis then answered with three more in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 7-3.
 
The final run of the game for the Bears came in the top of the fifth when Hulbert doubled to right field and scored on Logan Ferrell's single. St. Louis then added their final run in the bottom of the inning.
 
Jason Milton went 3.2 innings on the mound in taking the loss for the Bears. He allowed seven runs, only two earned, and four hits while striking out two and walking five. Jade Whitten surrendered a run and three hits in 1.1 innings while striking out one. Jacob Savoy struck out one and walked on in one inning of work.
 
In the nightcap, Baton Rouge scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the second inning. They added another run in the third and two more in the seventh.
 
Jesse Travis took the tough-luck loss on the mound for the Bears. In six innings of work, he gave up two runs (one earned) on only three hits. He struck out three and issued four bases on balls. Sam Richard went one inning on the mound, giving up two unearned runs on one hit while walking two and striking out one. Brady Badon pitched one inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.
 
Trent Gordy, Jones, Knight and Payden Lynch all singled for the Bears.
