Bears win big over visiting Co-Lin

The Southwest Bears remained in the thick of the hunt for a state-playoff berth with a 93-64 win over visiting Co-Lin Thursday night. The Bears moved to 12-7 overall and, at 6-4, continued to be in a tie with Pearl River for third place in the MACJC's South Division. The badly outmanned Co-Lin squad fell to 8-11 and 4-6.

A pair of free throws from Deione Weeks and Twymond Howard's jumper gave the Bears a quick 4-0 lead Monday night. They quickly stretched that lead to 18 points, 24-6, on Christian Robbins' bucket with 11:37 to play in the half.

Co-Lin was able to cut the lead down to 12 points on two occasions before the break, but could come no closer. A three-pointer from Jaylen Moore sent the Bears into the locker room at halftime with a 45-25 advantage.

The second half was all Southwest as Co-Lin was able to get no closer than 15 points, 54-39, with 14:42 left in the game. Xavion Dillon's three-pointer, with 3:37 on the clock, pushed the Bears' lead to 90-60 and they went on to the 29-point victory.

"I'm just really proud of the way we were focused," said Southwest head man Casey Carter. "We paid attention to the game plan (of what) we needed to do to come out successful tonight."

"In a game like this," Carter went on, "a lot of pressure is on you because of the situation Co-Lin was in (playing with only six players) and to make sure that you take care of business. I thought our guys did a really good job of handling that pressure and executing what they needed to."

Weeks led the Bears' offense with 14 points in the game. Howard, Chris Jones and Moore all scored 13 points. Dillon scored nine points while Justin McCray and Corey Williams both had eight.

Robbins totaled six points on the night, Donovan James picked up five while Jamal Hester and Jeremy Reddy both netted two. The Bears made eight of 12 free throws.

Co-Lin was topped by Michael Vardaman's 23 points. The visitors made 11 of 20 free throws.

The Bears' next contest comes Monday night when they visit Pearl River in Poplarville, Game time is set for 7:00.
