Bears go down at Meridian, now await start of MACJC State Tournament

The MACJC regular season came to an end for the Southwest Bears Thursday as they dropped a 77-65 decision to their hosts, the Meridian Eagles, in Graham Gymnasium.
 
The regular season ended with the Bears at 12-11 overall and 6-8 in the South Division. Despite the loss, they will advance to next week's state tournament in Fulton as the number four seed from the South. They will play tournament host Itawamba, the North's number one team, Monday at 6:00.
 
Meridian closed out their year at 6-17 and 5-9.
 
Meridian jumped out to a 13-4 lead Thursday night with 15:10 left in the first half. The Bears then closed the gap to 15-10 on Justin McCray's free throw with 13:52 on the clock then tied it at 19-19 on a Twymond Howard bucket with 9:01 to play. The Eagles then went on a 17-5 tear to close out the half and take a 36-24 lead at the break.
 
The second half belonged to Meridian as the hosts extended their lead to 18 points on two occasions. Only three times were the Bears able to cut the lead to below double figures. But, Meridian answered each time and went on to the double-digit win.
 
Jaylen Moore led the Southwest offense with 18 points on the night. Corey Williams finished with 15 points while Howard ended with a double double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
 
Xavion Dillon scored nine points in the game while Jamal Hester and Chris Jones both picked up four. McCray ended the game with three points and Christian Robbins netted two. The Bears hit 19 of 31 free throws.
 
Corey Brister's 27 points led Meridian and all scorers. The Eagles were good on 15 of 22 free throws.
