Bears prevail over Hinds, 57-46

Box Score----/documents/2014/12/9//iTS_08_12_2014_1.pdf?id=537

Although it was a low-scoring affair, it was a huge win for the Southwest Bears Monday as they prevailed 57-46 over the visiting Hinds Bulldogs.

The win gave the Bears a 3-5 mark as they ended the 2014 portion of the schedule and moved them to 1-1 in the MACJC South Division. Hinds, which had entered the game on a four-game winning streak, dropped to 5-4 and 1-1.

Three-pointers seemed to the theme of the game for Southwest. A
Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier, MS, Gautier) three-pointer gave the Bears an early 3-0 lead Monday night. Leading 11-10, with 13:14 left in the half, the Bears used another Rutledge trey, along with one from Trent Jeffries (Gulfport, MS, Harrison Central), to go on an 11-4 run and extend their lead to 22-14 with 9:29 on the clock.

Hinds came back to within four, 22-18, with 6:27 to play in the half before a
Xavion Dillon (Tylertown, MS, Tylertown) bucket and a pair of Jeffries free throws pushed the Bears' lead back to eight points, 26-18, with 3:51 showing. The Bears then took a 29-22 lead at the half.

Hinds scored nine of the second half's first 13 points to cut their deficit to two points, 33-31, with 15:06 left in the game. A Jeffries three and layup then extended the Bears' lead back to seven, 38-31, with 12:35 left in the game. His third three-pointer of the game made the score 41-32 with 10:37 to go.

Leading 47-38, the Bears saw Hinds cut the lead down to four, 50-46, with 2:02 on the clock.
Justin McCray (Ridgeland, MS, Ridgeland) then became the star of the show for the Bears as he scored on a layup and nailed a three-pointer, the latter with the shot clock running out, to push the lead back to nine, 55-46, with 0:47 left. Xavion Dillon added a pair of free throws to give the Bears their final margin of victory.

"Hinds is a good team," said Southwest head coach Thomas Gray. "(They) came in on a four-game winning streak, beating a couple of really good teams in this league by 20 points."

"I could not be happier for Justin McCray," Gray said of the sophomore's end-game heroics, stepping up" (McCray started the game in place of injured David Burrell, the Bears' second leading scorer). He has waited his turn, sat on the bench for the better part of a year and a half, and what a way to finish (a game). He came through with a couple of big plays (including the three-pointer) that pretty much sealed the deal."

Jeffries had 15 points for the Bears to lead all scorers in the game. Dillon and
Jaylen Moore (Gulfport, MS, Harrison Central) both finished the game with a double-double as they both scored 13 points and had 10 and 18 rebounds, respectively. Moore also topped the Bears with six assists.

McCray ended the game with seven points while Rutledge had six,
Chris McIntosh (Jackson, MS, Murrah) two and Cliff Fernandez (Sandy Hook, MS, Dexter) one. The Bears connected on 13 of 16 free throws.

Edward Walker led Hinds' offense with 14 points. The Bulldogs hit five of 10 free throws.

After taking time off for final exams and the Christmas/New Year's break, the Bears resume play on January 5 when they host Mississippi Delta.
