Bears fall to Rangers, 84-78, in overtime

Outshooting the Northwest Rangers 44.8% (13-29) to 17.6% (6-34) and leading by nine points at the half, the Southwest Bears looked to be on their way to a win Tuesday afternoon in Booneville.  But, second-half foul trouble caught up with the Bears as they dropped an 84-78 overtime decision on the final day of the Northeast Tipoff Classic.

The Bears will return to action on November 10 when they hit the road to Moorhead to play the Mississippi Delta Trojans. Tipoff there is set for 8:00.

The Bears fell behind 4-0 early Tuesday, but quickly found their stride. A dunk by David Burrell and a pair of Lafayette Rutledge three-pointers served as bookends to a 17-2 run that put the Bears on top 17-6 with 13:22 to play in the first half.

A layup and three-pointer from Tyrin Jones helped the Rangers (2-0) pull back to within three points, 22-19, with 7:40 left in the half. Justin McCray, Jaylen Moore and CJ Polite then combined to score 13 of the first-half's final 20 points to give the Bears a 35-26 lead at the break.

Northwest outscored the Bears (0-2) 19-11 to open the second half and pulled back to within one point, 46-45, with 13:23 left in the game. After a Cliff Fernandez layup put the Bears back up 48-45, Northwest then scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 54-50 lead with 9:40 to play.

Down by five, 59-54, with 8:11 to play, the Bears used five points from Moore, three from Xavion Dillon and two by Trent Jeffries to draw back to within one point, 64-63, with 1:55 showing on the clock.

A layup by Moore put the game into a 66-66 tie with 0:56 remaining. Both teams then had chances to pull out a win in regulation, but were unable to do so, sending the game into the extra period.

In the overtime, Northwest held a 72-69 lead before the Bears knotted things at 72-72 on another Rutledge three-pointer with 1:51 on the clock. Unfortunately for the Bears, Northwest then scored seven straight to pull ahead 79-72 with 0:43 to play.

Rutledge's final two three-pointers of the game made the score 81-78 with 0:05 on the clock, but Kieth Broome nailed three free throws to sealed the deal for Northwest.

Moore led all scorers in the game with 28 points and five assists. Rutledge was also in double figures with 19 points.

Dillon and Jeffries both netted seven points (Dillon also had 10 rebounds) while Burrell and McCray both scored five points. Fernandez chipped in four points and Polite had three. The Bears hit 16 of 27 free throws.
