Northeast overcomes early deficit to defeat Bears in Booneville

Unable to sustain an early edge, the Southwest Bears went on to drop an 88-72 decision to the host Northeast Tigers on the opening day of the Northeast Classic. It was the first game of the 2014-15 basketball season for both teams.

The Bears took an early 2-0 lead on Xavion Dillon's bucket then pushed it to 19-10 on a LeDerrius Simmons three-pointer with 13:05 left in the half. The Tigers battled back to only trail 26-20 after the Bears' Jaylen Moore hit a pair of free throws with 9:03 on the clock.

It was at that point that the wheels seemed to fall off the bus for the Bears as the Tigers exploded for a 21-2 run to take a 41-28 lead with 2:21 to still to play in the half. The hosts then took a 46-34 lead into intermission.

The Tigers pushed their lead to 55-40 on Chase Carroll's three-pointer with 15:32 left in the game. A Justin McCray layup and four free throws from Moore brought the Bears back to within nine, 57-48, with 13:20 to play. But, that would prove to be as close as the Bears would get as Northeast went on to the 16-point win.

"Our guys played extremely hard," said first-year Southwest head coach Thomas Gray. "We just had a few things that didn't seem to go our way. (But) with a lot of new faces, there was a lot to be encouraged about with the way our guys played."

"It was good to get out and see our guys playing against someone," Gray went on. "Anytime you do that, especially early, you can really spot where you might not be the strongest and areas that need improvement."

Moore led all scorers in the game with 30 points. Dillon was also in double figures, and had a double-double, with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

David Burrell scored seven points for the Bears while Simmons and Lafayette Rutledge both had six. McCray and McIntosh both scored two points. The Bears made good on 17 of 27 free throws and totaled 37 rebounds.

Dimario Jackson led five Tigers in double figures with 24 points. The Tigers made 21 of 26 free throws and had 40 total rebounds.

The Bears hit the hardwood again this afternoon with a 3:00 tipoff against the Northwest Rangers. The game can be heard on WAKK 1140 AM as well as on the internet, at southwestbearathletics.com and k106.net, and on smart phones and tablets (by downloading the k106 app).
