Bears remain in playoff hunt with 3-1 win over visiting Jones County

The Southwest Bears remained in the hunt for a berth in the state and regional tournaments Friday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the visiting Jones County Bobcats in MACJC South Division soccer. It was the first victory over Jones County in the history of the Bears' soccer program.

In order to reach the playoffs, the Bears (4-10-2, 4-4-1) must now defeat Meridian in the regular-season finale (Wednesday at 7:00 in Meridian) and then receive help from the complicated tie-breaker system.

The Bears scored the only goal of the first half and took a 1-0 at 37:00 of the match Friday when Drew McInnis took a beautiful ball from Eric Woodard and headed it into the window of the lower right 90.

Jones County (6-6-1, 5-3-1) tied the match at 1-1 just 2:00 into the second half on a goal by Michael Stringer.

The Bears then regained the lead for good (2-1) at 61:00 when Woodard threw the ball inbounds to Denver Bankston who took a touch and beat the Bobcats' defender and slotted the ball into the goal at the lower left 90. Bankston returned the favor at 75:00 and provided the assist as Woodard scored the final score of the day to give the Bears the two-goal win.
