Lady Bears split with Pearl River

Harley Myers' ninth-innning double gives the Lady Bears a 6-5 win in game one against Pearl River
A one-out double by Harley Myers in the bottom of the ninth inning sent Heather Magee to the plate to give the Southwest Lady Bears a thrilling 6-5 win over visiting Pearl River Saturday in the first game of their doubleheader. Pearl River came back to get the split with a 9-0 in the finale.

The Lady Bears now stand at 16-16 on the season and 6-8 in the MACJC South Division. Pearl River moved to 18-13 and 7-5.

Southwest took a 2-0 first-inning lead in the opener when Chelsea Nette led off with a single and later scored on a Pearl River error. A Carrie Phillips base hit sent Brie Harper, on base via a fielder’s choice, to the plate with the second run.

The Lady Wildcats used three hits to put their first run on the board in the top of the third inning and tied the game with a solo run in the top of the fourth. Three hits and a walk allowed them to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth.

Consecutive two-out singles from Nette, Harper and Harley Myers resulted in a run for the Lady Bears in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings with the score knotted at 3-3.

After Pearl River took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth, the Lady Bears’ Phillips doubled in the bottom of the frame to send Miranda Smith home and force the game to the ninth with the game tied at 4-4.

In the top of the ninth, back-to-back groundouts with a runner on second gave Pearl River a run to put them on top 5-4. Then came the bottom of the ninth and Myers’ heroics that gave the Lady Bears the win.
Kristen Gekler pitched 4.1 innings in relief of Rachel Smith to pick up the win. She surrendered three runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two. Smith went 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. She struck out three while issuing no bases on balls.

The second game was all Pearl River as the Lady Wildcats scored all the runs they would need with two in the top of the first inning. They added one in both the second and third innings, two in the fourth and three in the sixth.

Phillips pitched five innings in taking the loss for the Lady Bears. She gave up seven runs on six hits while striking out five and walking five. Gekler pitched one inning, giving up two runs on three hits.

Southwest was limited to two singles from Nette and a base hit from Marissa Jenkins.
