Bears end the year on a down note

Two two-run homers from Kade Scivicque and Kendric Hodges’ 4-4 performance were not enough as the Southwest Bears ended the 2013 season on a down note at home with an 8-5 game-two loss to 9th-ranked Pearl River Saturday. Pearl River took the opener 9-0.

Pearl River took a 3-0 first-inning lead in the finale before the Bears tied the game with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. Logan Ferrell reached base with a one-out single before Scivicque blasted his first homer to left centerfield. Collin Carroll followed with a single and scored on Hodges’ double down the line in right field. He later added three singles in the game.

Scivicque’s second two-run bomb, also to left center, put Southwest up 5-3 in the bottom of the second. Scoring ahead of Scivicque was Brandon Austin, on base via a base hit up the middle.

The visiting Wildcats then tied the score at 5-5 with two runs in their half of the third inning. They then added the final runs of the day in the fourth to get the sweep.

Chase Ladd took the loss in relief for the Bears, giving up three runs (two earned) on a hit and walk. Kyle Crifasi started the game and gave up five runs (four earned) and five hits while striking out three and walking three. Colton Lee followed Ladd on the mound and allowed one hit in one inning of work. Jared Simon closed out the game by retiring all six batters he faced, two by strikeout.

Carroll had two hits in the game while Anthony Durr, Logan Ferrell and Chris Gill also hit safely.
Pearl River scored the only run they would need in the top of the first in game one to take a 1-0 lead. They added two more in the third, two in the second and closed the game out with four in the sixth.

Dylan Gregoire went six innings to take the loss on the mound for the Bears. He allowed nine runs, four earned, while giving up 10 hits. He struck out two and walked two. J. D. Stockstill faced all three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

Carroll had two singles in the game for Southwest while Patric Devlin and Scivicque also hit safely.
