Bears fall twice at Hinds

Still searching for a spot in the upcoming MACJC state playoffs, the Southwest Bears dropped a pair of crucial South Division games at Hinds Tuesday, falling 7-1 and 6-3.

With the losses, the Bears fell to 19-25 overall and 8-14 in the South Division. They are now two games behind Gulf Coast in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot. Gulf Coast split with East Central Tuesday night.

Southwest trailed 5-0 in the first game before getting on board with a single run in the top of the sixth. After Collin Carroll reached second base on an error and moved to third on an Anthony Durr fly out, he scored when Patric Devlin reached first on a fielder’s choice. Gulf Coast added two more runs in their half of the sixth to reach the final score.

Trace Robinson gave up six earned runs on 11 hits in five innings to take the loss for Southwest. He struck out four batters while walking two. Colton Lee struck out one and walked one in an inning of relief.

Brandon Austin, Carroll, Logan Ferrell and Kendric Hodges all singled for the Bears.

The Bears fell behind 2-0 after two innings of the nightcap before tying the game, 2-2, with two of their own in the top of the third. Logan Ferrell reached base on a one-out walk, stole second and scored when Carroll made it to first on an error. Two batters later, Marvin Van Buren reached the plate on a Durr sacrifice fly.

Southwest took its only lead of the day, 3-2. After reaching base on a two-out single, Austin stole second and scored when Ferrell got on base via an error. That proved to be as close as the Bears would get as Hinds added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to the three-run victory.

Kade Scivicque gave up four runs on five hits and a walk in two innings of relief to take the loss for Southwest. Starter Jesse Travis allowed two runs on four hits in four innings. He struck out two.

Austin added a second base hit in the game while Carroll, Durr and Devlin also hit safely.

Southwest closes out the regular season Saturday when they host Division-leading Pearl River in a 3:00 doubleheader.
