Lady Bears split South Division doubleheader at Co-Lin

A four-run eighth inning allowed the Lady Bears to defeat arch-rival Co-Lin 7-4 in the finale of their MACJC South Division doubleheader in Wesson Wednesday. Co-Lin prevailed 3-0 in the opener.
 
With the split, the Lady Bears stand at 17-21 on the season and 7-11 in the Division. They are 3 ½ games behind Pearl River for a playoff spot. Co-Lin stands at 22-16-1 and 7-13.
 
Southwest took a 1-0 third inning lead in the nightcap when Harley Myers reached base on a two-out single to left field, stole second and scored on Brie Harper’s hit. They made it 2-0 in the fourth when Carrie Phillips led off the inning with a double and scored on a Marissa Jenkins double.
 
Co-Lin picked up three runs in their half of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The Lady Bears then tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth when Mary Margaret McLaurin reached base on a one-out single and scored on a Chelsea Nette single. Neither team could produce any further runs in regulation play.
 
With Amy Lea on second base for the Lady Bears to start the eighth inning, she advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Bravata reached base on an error. They added three more runs and held Co-Lin to a solo run in the bottom of the inning.
 
Sophomore Rachel Smith went the distance to record the win for the Lady Bears. She scattered five hits and gave up four runs while striking out eight and walking one.
 
Harper had three hits for the Lady Bears while Phillips and Nette both had two. Grace Bravata also hit safely.
 
Co-Lin scored all the runs they would need with two in the third inning of the opener. They added a single run in the fourth. The Lady Bears were held to a double by Jenkins and singles from Bravata and Myers.
 
Phillips pitched 3.1 innings in taking the loss for Southwest. He gave up two runs, none earned, on three hits while striking out four and walking two. Kristen Gekler gave up a run on two hits in 3 innings of work. She struck out one batter and walked one.
 
The Lady Bears play their final home doubleheader Saturday against East Central. Game one is set for a 1:00 first p
