Bears fall twice to Co-Lin

The Southwest Bears dropped a pair of MACJC South Division home games to rival Co-Lin Sunday afternoon, falling 7-4 and 10-7. The games marked the first round of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade.
 
Southwest took a 4-0 lead after two innings of game one. In the first inning, Frank Rodriguez blasted a two-out, bases-loaded double to right field. Scoring on the play were Brandon Austin, Collin Carroll and Kendric Hodges. The Bears picked up their next run in the second inning when Austin lined a double to right center to send Logan Ferrell to the plate.
 
Co-Lin took advantage of five hits and two Southwest errors to tie at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning. The Wolves then added one more in the fifth before scoring their final two runs in the top of the seventh.
 
Dylan Gregoire went 6.1 innings on the mound to take the loss for Southwest (9-17, 0-6 South). He surrendered six hits and six runs, five runs, while striking out seven and walking two. Colton Lee gave up one unearned run on two hits in just under an inning of work. He struck out one batter and walked one.
 
Austin had a single in the game to go along with his double. Carroll singled
twice while Kade Scivicque and Andrew Hulbert also hit safely.
 
Co-Lin (15-10, 5-3) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first in game two, using two hits, a walk a hit batter and two Southwest errors.
 
The Bears tied the game at 3-3 with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. Carroll singled then, after a passed ball and wild pitch, scored when Scivicque reached base on an error. Two batters later, with courtesy runner Marvin Van Buren and Kendric Hodges on base, Rodriguez singled to send them both to the plate.
 
The Wolves then scored three of their own with two outs in the top of the second to go up 6-3, with help from three walks and three Southwest errors. Southwest added a run in the bottom of the frame, to make the score 6-4, when Austin singled and later scored from third base on a wild pitch.
 
Four hits and a walk allowed Co-Lin to increase their lead to 10-4 in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears added two more runs on an RBI double by Scivicque and Hodges’ RBI single. They scored their final run in the fifth when Anthony Durr reached on an error and later scored on Hulbert’s two-out base hit to left field.
 
Kyle Crifasi gave up nine runs, six earned, on five hits through three innings on the mound to take the loss for Southwest. He struck out four batters while walking five. Chase Ladd went the final four innings, giving up one earned run on five hits. He had one strikeout. Hodges had two singles in the game while Durr had also had two.
 
The Bears returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Perkinston to face Mississippi Gulf Coast. Game one is set for 3:00.
