Lady Bears win wild second game, split with Co-Lin

Brittany Jones scored on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Southwest Lady Bears survived a wild second game to split a doubleheader with visiting Co-Lin, 10-9 in eight innings, Tuesday. Trailing 7-1, Southwest scored three runs in the sixth inning of game one, but could not complete the comeback as they fell 7-4.
 
With the split, Southwest stands at 12-12 on the season and 2-4 in the MACJC South Division. Co-Lin moves to 15-9, 2-6.
 
The Lady Bears took a 1-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap when Brie Harper singled with score Chelsea Nette from third base. A two-run home run from Katie Allen and Nette’s RBI single in the second made the score 4-0. An RBI double from Marissa Jenkins in the third and Nette’s homer in the fifth put Southwest up 6-0 and seemingly in firm control.
 
But, then came the fifth inning. Using three walks, a hit batter and a Southwest error, the Lady Wolves put three runs on the board to make the score 6-3.        Co-Lin then added three more runs in the sixth inning, one on a solo homer from Kacie Berry to tie the game at 6-6.
 
With momentum clearly on their side, two walks and a hit then put gave Co-Lin a run and a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh. But, with one out in the bottom of the frame, the Lady Bears finally awoke from their slumber and tied the game, 7-7, on Jenkins one-out, no-doubt homer over the centerfield fence. With the next two batters unable to reach base, the game then went into an extra inning.
 
In the top of the eighth, a triple to left center field from Karla Beth Hux scored two runs for Co-Lin to put the Lady Wolves on top 9-7.

After the Lady Bears loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, a ground out by Kristen Geckler scored Marisa Pruski from third to make the score 9-8. A Harley Myers single up the middle sent Nette to the plate to tie the game at 9-9 and once again loaded the bases. The Southwest fans then were sent home happy as Brittany Jones scored from third on a wild pitch to end the game.
 
Carrie Phillips picked up the win for Southwest, in relief of starter Rachel Smith. Going two innings, Phillips gave up one hit and an unearned run. She struck out a batter while also walking one. Smith went six innings, giving up only three hits while striking out six and walking give. She allowed six runs, four earned.
 
Harper had three singles in the game while Jenkins also singled to finish with three hits. Phillips had two hits in the game while Geckler and Pruski also hit safely.
 
Southwest trailed 5-0 in game one before catcher Brie Harper blasted a home run to make it 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Co-Lin added two more in the top of the sixth to go up 7-1.
 
The Lady Bears made their comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. A single from Nette and Allen’s groundout scored two to make it 7-3. With the bases again loaded, Harper singled to make it 7-4, but that was as close as the Lady Bears could get as Co-Lin held on for the win.
 
Phillips took the loss for Southwest. Going 5 1/3 innings, she surrendered six runs, four earned, on 11 hits. She struck out one while walking two. Miranda Smith pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one unearned run on one hit.
 
Nette had two singles in the game while Myers had a double. Geckler, Grace Bravata, Heather Magee and Jenkins also hit safely.
 
Southwest continues South Division play Saturday when the Lady Bears head to Decatur to face the East Central Lady Warriors. The first pitch of game one is set for 1:00.
