Bears drop two at home to Mississippi Delta

Today's games at Univ. of South Alabama postponed until Tuesday

Their home debut did not go as the Southwest Bears would have hope for Sunday afternoon as the Mississippi Delta Trojans took a pair of victories, 6-0 and 3-1.

The losses dropped Southwest to 2-2 on the season while the Trojans moved to 3-3. The Bears will travel to the University of South Alabama, in Mobile, tomorrow for a 1:00 doubleheader against Wallace-Selma. The games were originally set for today, but postponed due to inclement weather.

Game one featured a pitching duel between the Bears’ Dylan Gregoire and Delta’s Turner Neely. Gregoire retired the first 15 batters he faced before giving up a lead-off single to Tyler Mize in the top of the sixth while Neely surrendered five hits.

Delta’s bats came alive in the top of the seventh inning. With Trace Robinson on the mound for Southwest, in relief of Gregoire, the Trojans used two hits and two walks to push three runs across the plate. J. D. Stockstill then entered the game, allowing three runs on three hits.

Robinson took the loss for Southwest. He struck out two batters while Stockstill fanned one batter. Gregoire had two strikeouts.

The Bears scattered seven hits in the seven-inning game. Collin Carroll and Frank Rodriguez both singled twice while Brandon Austin, Zach Jones and Derek Lacoste also hit safely.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second in game two, the Bears tied the score in the bottom of the frame. Kade Scivicque was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then moved to third on a Kendric Hodges double to right and scored on a passed ball. This proved to be the only offense the Bears could muster in the game. The Trojans added single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to take the win.

Caleb Crumpler took the loss on the mound for Southwest, surrendering all three runs on five hits while walking one. Colton Lee and Jesse Travis pitched in relief. Both struck out one batter while Travis issued a walk.
