Bears lose close one on the road

After holding a 10-point lead in the first half, the fire seemed to go out of the Southwest Bears and they went on to a 74-66 loss Monday night on the road at Bishop State Community College in Mobile. After enjoying time off for Thanksgiving, the Bears return to the court on December 2 when they head to Goodman for an 8:00 meeting with the Holmes Bulldogs.

Southwest (4-2) started off well at Bishop State, going up 4-0 on baskets by Jamal Hester and Twymond Howard. The Wildcats then came storming back to take a 12-10 lead with 11:56 to play in the first half. With Chris Jones and Howard both scoring five points, the Bears responded with a 12-0 run to go on top 22-12 with 7:24 on the clock.

The Bears' run seemed to ignite something in Bishop State as the home team went on a 27-4 tear to take a 39-26 lead with 0:36 left before the break. A pair of Xavion Dillon free throws sent the Bears into the locker room down 39-28.

The Wildcats seemed ready to turn the game into a rout early in the first half as Haylen Washington and Remondo Harris baskets gave them a 44-28 lead with 17:28 left in the game.

Southwest slowly fought their way back into the game and drew to within three points, 69-66, when Dillon hit a short jumper with 0:36 to play in the game. The Bears were unable to close the gap any further and the Wildcats held on for the eight-point win.

"It just didn't seem to be our night tonight," said Bears' head man Casey Carter. "In the first half, we just didn't play with any energy (or) any effort. (We) just didn't have the focus we needed to on the road."

"In the second half, we finally got going by playing with some energy and enthusiasm," Carter continued, "but, they'd (Bishop State) would run the shot clock down, make a couple of shots at the end of it. We'd have a turnover, run into each other. We'd have a wide-open layup and somehow miss it. We just had some tough breaks that didn't go our way. We've got to regroup, we'll go into the Thanksgiving break (and) get away from basketball for a few days then come back and get ready for a three-game stretch (against Holmes, Jones County and Gulf Coast) that's going to be very important for us."

Jaylen Moore paced the Bears offense with 19 points in the game. Howard was also in double figures with 16 points.

Corey Williams added eight points for the Bears while Jones chipped in seven. Dillon and Hester both scored six points and Deione Weeks netted four. The Bears were 14 of 22 from the free throw line.

Washington led Bishop State, and all scorers, with 21 points in the game. The Wildcats hit 14 of 19 free throws.
