Bears even division record with 89-80 win over East Central

The Bears closed out the first half of MACJC South Division action by defeating visiting East Central 89-80 Thursday night to cap a Southwest sweep of the visitors from Decatur. Earlier, the Lady Bears were 71-60 winners.

With the win, the Bears moved to 9-7 overall while the Lady Bears now stand at 10-6. Both teams are 3-3 in the South.

Southwest steps out of division play Monday when they travel to Meridian. The ladies’ games get underway at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00.

It was the Mark Bridgewater show in the first half of the men’s game. After Southwest took an early 2-0 lead on Donovan Ross’ jumper with 18:55 to play, Bridgewater began firing in three-pointers and helped the Bears build their lead to as many as 18 points, 42-24, with 5:36 on the clock. His fifth trey of the first half, going through the net as the buzzer sounded, sent his team into the locker room with a 53-40 lead.

The Warriors (1-15, 1-4 South) were never able to recover in the second half. With the Southwest defense not letting up, the visitors were able to come back no closer than seven points as the Bears moved to third place in the South.

“”We’re happy with this win,” said Southwest head man Casey Carter, “because, despite East Central’s record, they are a very solid team and have given everybody they’ve played a tough time as they did us (tonight).”

“Mark Bridgewater was obviously the difference in the game. If he continues to make shots like this, it will add another dimension to our team.” The sophomore from Hammond, LA, hit seven of nine three-point attempts, and a two-pointer, to lead the Bears with 23 points. He also dished out eight assists.

In addition to Bridgewater, Ross was also in double figures with 22 points while Corey Williams and Deville Smith were in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Smith also had nine assists.

Devin Flowers netted nine points for Southwest and Deione Weeks added six. Mikel Henry and Quintarius Porter both scored four. The Bears hit nine of 14 free throws.

The Warriors’ Bobby Wrench led all scorers with 24 points. East Central made 13 of 20 free throws.
