Bears pick important South Division win at Hinds

Southwest picked up two much-needed MACJC South Division wins Monday night against Hinds in Utica as the Bears came out on top, 75-69, and the Lady Bears picked up an easy 69-44 victory.

Southwest closes out the first round of South Division play Thursday at home as they host East Central. Tipoff is set for 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.

After falling behind early, 2-0, the Bears quickly rebounded to tie the game on a Deione Weeks basket with 18:51 to play in the first half. A Donovan Ross jumper then put Southwest on top for good, 4-2, with 18:47 to play.

The Bears (8-7, 2-3) stretched their lead to 10 points, 22-12, on a pair of Deville Smith free throws with 10:19 on the clock before a 17-8 Hinds run closed the gap to 30-29 with 4:03 showing. Two Quintarius Porter free throws ended the run for Southwest and the Bears outscored the Bulldogs (10-5, 1-3) 9-3 the rest of the way to take a 39-32 lead at the break.

After Hinds came to within four points, 45-41, with 14:11 left in the game, the Bears regained their bearings to outscore their hosts 21-10 over the next 10:29 and go up 67-51. Not going quietly into the night, the Bulldogs went on a 13-3 run to come back to within six points, 70-64, with 1:04 left in the game. Southwest then went back up by eight, 72-64, on a pair of Smith free throws with 0:53 to play and held on for the crucial win.

“We talked before the game,” Southwest head coach Casey Carter said of he and his team, “about (how) we were either going to figure this thing out and start winning some games or we’re just going to struggle the rest of the year and miss the playoffs like last year. We made huge strides as a team (tonight) in starting to move in that positive direction.”

“In a game where we were troubled with fouls and injuries, “Carter continued, “we were still able to finish a very good Hinds team on the road. Even with a noticeable injury, Deville was still able to have a very productive game. (Smith finished the night leading all scorers with 20 points. He also picked up eight rebounds and had seven assists). Donovan Ross was a major impact guy in a lot of different areas tonight and when (he has a game like that) we’re really good.”

Ross finished the game with 17 points, along with six boards, while Mark Bridgewater was also in double figures with 11 points. Weeks added eight points, along with six rebounds, for the Bears while Porter also netted eight points.

Mikel Henry registered five points in the game while Tyree McDonald had three, Corey Williams two and Devin Flowers one. The Bears made good on 29 of 36 free throws.

Dominique Brown led three Bulldogs in double figures with 11 points. Hinds hit 12 of 25 free throws.
