Bears suffer tough loss at Gulf Coast

Southwest dropped a pair of MACJC South Division soccer games on the road at Mississippi Gulf Coast Saturday with the Bears falling 4-2 and the Lady Bears 5-0.

With the loss, the Bears dropped to 0-5 overall (0-2 in the South) and the Lady Bears to 1-4 (0-2).

A goal by Jake Saltalamacchia, off a penalty kick, put Southwest up 1-0 at 9:00 in the men’s game. The lead held up until the 30:00 when Gulf Coast’s Nick Wheelock found the goal to tie the game at 1-1. Twelve minutes later, Jake Crawford scored for the Bulldogs to give them a 2-1 lead at the break.

Saltalamacchia scored his second goal of the game at 65:00, with an assist from Mike Barlow, to tie the game at 2-2. But, that proved to be the last goal of the night for the Bears. Gulf Coast then scored at 78:00 and 88:00 to escape with the win.

Southwest keepers Ryan Willcutt and Will Evans had six and four saves, respectively.

Southwest returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Ellisville to face Jones County. Game times are 5:00 for the ladies and 7:00 for the men.
