Bears drop season-opener

The regular season got off to a mixed start for Southwest Mississippi Community College Friday as the Lady Bears took a 3-0 non-division decision over host Holmes Community College while the Bears fell 4-1.

Things did not go well for the Southwest men (0-1) as two goals from Bryan Diaz put the Bulldogs (1-0) up 2-0 at the break and Macaulay Gibson’s goal gave the hosts a 3-0 lead at the 50:00 mark.

Southwest finally got on the board in the 74th minute on a Jake Saltalamacchia goal. Bryan Stewart-Bennett assisted. That proved to be as close as the Bears would come as a goal by Ryan James gave the hosts their final margin of victory.

“I didn’t think we played well,” said Gallant. “We started out really flat and made a mistake early on to give up an easy goal (Diaz’s first goal came two minutes into the contest). We created a lot of opportunities in the first half and were not able to capitalize on them.”

“The second half started out the same way the first did,” Gallant went on. “Salt’s goal gave us a spark, but it came too late in the game.”

Southwest returns to action Tuesday as they hit Interstate 55 for a trip to Senatobia to face Northwest Mississippi. Scheduled game times are 3:00 for the ladies and 5:00 for the men.
