Bears split with Pearl River

A quality performance by starting pitcher Shelby Johnson helped the Southwest Bears pick up a 3-2 win over visiting Pearl River in the opener of their South Division doubleheader Tuesday. Pearl River came back to pick up the split with an 8-2 decision in the finale.

A two-out error followed by two hits allowed the Wildcats take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one. Southwest tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning when Aaron Moore led off the inning with a walk and later scored on an Alex Marshall sacrifice fly.

The Bears (13-19, 6-6) took a 2-1 lead in the third Johnny McKenzie lined a single to center field, advanced to second on a Pearl River error and scored on German Hays’ single down the first base line.

Southwest increased their lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Luke Gipson doubled to start the frame, moved to third on another Pearl River error and scored on Marshall’s second sacrifice fly of the day. A hit batter and two base hits helped the Wildcats (20-12, 5-7) pick up their final run in the fifth inning.

The Wildcats had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh inning, but reliever Jared Fiorito struck out the only batter he faced and the only batter faced by Kade Scivicque lined out to Gipson at first to end the game.

Johnson gave a very good account of himself in the game, scattering six hits while allowing only one earned run. He struck out four batters and walked three. Scivicque earned the save. Marshall and Scivicque both singled.
After the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two, Southwest went on top 2-1 with solo runs in the bottom of the first and second innings.

The first run came when Hays lined a one-out triple to the wall in left center field and scored two batters later on Connor Goodspeed’s double. In the second inning, courtesy runner Jawon Jackson scored from second on a Pearl River error. Jackson was on base in place on Austin Terrell who had walked with one out.

Pearl River tied the game a 2-2 in the fourth inning on Chad Livingston’s solo homer to right field. They then used three hits, a hit batter and a Southwest error to score four runs and increase their lead to 6-2 in the fifth. They added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Scivicque allowed eight hits and six runs, four earned, in five innings to take the loss for the Bears. Jeffery Courville pitched the final two innings. Moore had two singles in the game while Darron McKigney and Hays also singled.

The Bears remain home for their next doubleheader as they host arch rival Co-Lin Friday for the final round of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge. Game one is set for 2:00.
