Bears suffer tough losses at Hinds

Still very much in the hunt for spot in the MACJC playoffs, he Southwest Bears’ dropped a pair of important South Division games in Raymond Thursday to the host Hinds Eagles. The Bears fell 7-6 in the 12-inning, three-hour plus marathon opener and were defeated 8-1 in the nightcap.

An extra inning game did not seem to be in the cards after division-leading Hinds (29-9, 13-6) took a 5-0 lead after three innings. But, the Bears showed they had some fight in them. Kade Scivicque led off the top of the fourth with a solo homer to left center, his fourth round-tripper of the season, to make the score 5-1.

Southwest (17-23, 8-10) made the score 5-3 in the fifth when Jake Martin was hit by a pitch and Chance Schmidt reached on an error and both scored on ground outs. A two-RBI single by Alex Marshall in the sixth inning drove Darron McKigney and Jawon Jackson to the plate and tied the game at 5-5.

Doubles by Chris Jones and Pierson Waring resulted in a run and put the Eagles on top 6-5 after six innings. The Bears tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh when Johnny McKenzie led off with the second of his three hits in the game and scored when German Hays reached third on an error. Southwest had a chance to take the lead one batter later, but Hays was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a fly ball to leftfield.

Hinds missed an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the seventh when they put a runner on third with only one out. But, reliever Tyler Kendrick replaced starter Shelby Johnson and, after striking out one batter and walking another, induced Jones to fly out to center to send the game into extra innings.
Neither team could mount a serious scoring opportunity in innings eight through 11. After the Bears were unable to score in a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the top of the 12th, Caleb Baucum ended the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the inning when he blasted a walk-off home run to left field to allow the Eagles to escape with the win.

Reliever Jared Fiorito took the loss on the mound for Southwest despite allowing only two hits in three innings. He struck out one batter. Marshall added a double in the game while McKigney had a double and single.

The Eagles scored single runs in the second and third innings of game two to take a 2-0 lead. Five hits, a walk and two Southwest errors allowed the hosts to score six runs in the fifth inning and take a commanding 8-0 lead.

The Bears picked up their only run of the game in the top of the sixth when Hays led off with a double and scored three batters later when Connor Goodspeed reached base on a two-out error.

Surrendering five runs on eight hits through just over four innings, Scivicque took the loss on the mound for the Bears. The freshman right-hander struck out four batters while walking none. Jody Lampton, Clint McDaniel and McKigney also saw time on the mound.

McKenzie had a single to give him four hits on the day. Marshall and Schmidt also hit safely.

Weather permitting, the Bears are scheduled to return to action Saturday with a 2:00 doubleheader against Mississippi Gulf Coast.
