Lady Bears, Pearl River split division doubleheader

The Southwest Lady Bears rode the bat of sophomore shortstop Tipheri Grimes and the arm of freshman pitcher Rachel Smith to a 2-1 win over visiting Pearl River Tuesday in game one of their South Division doubleheader. Pearl River won a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, Smith then retired 11 batters in a row on her way to picking up the win. She allowed only one run on only three hits while striking out eight and surrendering no walks. Grimes made the score 1-1 in the bottom of the third when she doubled to send Victoria Price to the plate.

With the game still tied in the bottom of the sixth, Grimes led off the inning with a monster home run off the scoreboard just over the left centerfield fence to put Southwest (6-22, 4-14)  up 2-1. A two-out single in the top of the seventh was not enough for the Lady Wildcats.

Brittany Baughman, Grace Bravata, Camden Graham and Mandy Szigeti all recorded singles for the Lady Bears.

Things did not go as well in the finale despite another quality performance from Smith and her teammates. Smith gave up three runs on four hits and struck out six while also walking six.

The Lady Wildcats (16-15, 8-6) took a 2-0 lead on Heather Hester’s home run in the top of the third inning and used two hits and a walk to go up 3-0 in the fourth.

Southwest picked up their only run in the fifth inning when Grimes reached base on a one-out walk and later scored on Aseye Attipoe’s single.
Bravata had three singles for the Lady Bears while Brooke Szigeti and Mandy Szigeti also hit safely.

Southwest returns to action Thursday when they travel to Raymond to face the Lady Eagles of Hinds in a 2:00 doubleheader.
