Lady Bears split with Hinds

In two down-to-the-wire finishes, the Southwest Lady Bears split a South Division doubleheader with visiting Hinds Tuesday, winning 2-1 in the opener before dropping a 6-5 decision in the nightcap. With the split, the Lady Bears now stand at 4-9 on the season and 2-3 in the South. Hinds is now 10-10, 3-3.

Base hits were few and far between in game one as Hinds was held to two singles while the Lady Bears had singles from Brooke Szigeti, Grace Bravata, Tipheri Grimes and Mandy Szigeti.

A base hit, walk and wild pitch helped the Lady Eagles take a 1-0 after three innings. Southwest tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Aseye Attipoe walked with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and score on Bravata’s base hit.

Southwest picked up the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Mandy Szigeti, who singled to lead off the inning, scored from second on a Hinds throwing error. Pitcher Rachel Smith went the distance to get the win for the Lady Bears. She struck out seven batters while walking only two.

In the finale, a Hinds error allowed Grimes to score in the first inning to put the Lady Bears up 1-0. Hinds then answered with four in the top of the second to go up 4-1. In the fourth, Mandy Szigeti blasted a solo homer to pull the Lady Bears to within two runs, at 4-2, before Hinds got the run back in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-2.

Southwest tied the game at 5-5 with three runs in the fifth inning. Katie Allen led off the frame with a walk and scored on a Camden Graham homer. Mandy Szigeti then walked, moved to second on a steal and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Bravata’s sacrifice fly. A hit, walk and error then allowed Hinds to score what proved to be the winning run in the top of the seventh. All three Southwest batters were retired in the bottom of the inning, allowing the Lady Eagles to escape with the win.

Smith took the loss for Southwest, allowing nine hits while striking out five and walking six. Bravata had two singles while Allen also hit safely.

The Lady Bears return to the diamond at 1:00 today to complete the game with Gulf Coast that was halted by rain on Friday. The game will resume with Gulf Coast batting in the top of the fourth, leading 4-1.
