Lady Bears suffer tough losses at Gulf Coast

The Southwest Lady Bears dropped a pair of heart-breaking decisions, 2-1 and 1-0, on the road at Mississippi Gulf Coast Friday despite the performance of freshman pitcher Rachel Smith.

Smith held the hosts to a total of three hits on the day, but the Lady Bulldogs showed they did not need them as all their runs came without a hit. Southwest struggled at the plate as well, picking up only five total hits.

Two walks, a passed ball and a Southwest error allowed Gulf Coast (19-5, 10-2) to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Bears scored their only run in the top of the fourth when Anissia Franklin scored from third on a wild pitch. Franklin was on base in place of Grace Bravata who had led off the inning with a single.
Smith allowed the Lady Bulldogs only two hits in the game while striking out one and walking two. Brooke Szigeti and Mandy Szigeti also had singles for Southwest (4-20, 2-12).

The Lady Bulldogs used a walk, passed ball and a Southwest error to pick up the only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. The hosts registered their only hit in the sixth inning. Smith struck out three and walked four in the game. Southwest had singles from Katie Allen and Aseye Attipoe.

Southwest returns to the diamond Monday when they host archrival Co-Lin in a 3:00 doubleheader.
